Camp Staff

Program and Counselling Staff
The majority of camp counsellors and program staff are graduates from the Leadership Training Program and have diabetes, and thus are excellent role models for campers.

All counsellors and program staff work closely alongside the campers and with the health care professionals in diabetes management. The number-one priority of the counselling program, as well as the health professional staff, is to provide a safe, fun and memorable experience for the campers, focusing on diabetes management and day-to-day living.

Health Care Team

The Health Care Team at camp includes doctors, registered nurses, diabetes educators, student nurses, dieticians and dietetic interns. These professionals provide top-notch medical care to the campers and staff, and are a key part of the operation of Camp Lion Maxwell. These qualified and dedicated professionals work closely with the campers and counsellors to ensure the utmost in diabetes education and management. The camping environment allows the campers to develop warm relationships with health professionals, enabling the children and youth to learn in a non-threatening atmosphere.

Fees

Camp Lion Maxwell will be piloting a NEW “3-Tiered Voluntary Pricing Program” for the 2010 Summer. We have done this for a few reasons: first, we recognize that our families have different abilities to pay. Second, we feel it is important that we begin to communicate the true cost of camp to our camper families. Historically, we have been charging roughly 25% of the true cost directly to our participants. This of course has placed a tremendous burden on the camp’s capacity. In order to continue to provide the camping services that we do for children with type 1 diabetes in Nova Scotia, we need to take a more proactive approach in how we manage our subsidies. We hope to do this with the voluntary 3-tiered pricing program.

This year, we ask that you please take a moment to look at the rate descriptions and determine which of these three prices your family is able to pay for your child’s experience. This is strictly an honour system; select the fee you feel is appropriate and that is what you will pay. The program is voluntary, and in no way influences the experience a child will receive at camp. Please note that additional financial assistance with camp fees is still available via application for campership, but funds are limited.

Tier 1: Lightly Subsidized = $550 per child
Tier 2: Partially Subsidized = $425 per child
Tier 3: Heavily Subsidized = $300 per child

There is a $100 non-refundable deposit that is required for all applications. Also, please note that the camp fees need to be paid in full before the start of the camp session.
