Camp Homewood, (British Columbia)
The Vancouver Island Region of the Canadian Diabetes Association offers children with diabetes and their families a weekend camping experience at Camp Homewood on Quadra Island. Relationships are the heart of Family Camp. Families with a newly-diagnosed child connect with those who have a few years of experience with diabetes and in the process, new hope and encouragement are born and coping strategies are shared.
The program includes adult sharing times, education sessions with qualified presenters, and facilitated small group discussions for children with diabetes and their siblings. Best of all, children with diabetes feel perfectly normal at Family Camp – because diabetes is a part of daily life for everyone at camp.
Family activities include horseback riding, riflery, archery, canoeing, rowing, sailing and hiking. The emphasis is on fun and connecting with other families. There is also a program of diabetes education for teens and parents. Healthcare professionals may attend as volunteer diabetes resources but parents are wholly responsible for the supervision, safety, and diabetes management of their children at camp.
