Family Camp (British Columbia)

Family Camp is for the whole family (parents, siblings, and children with diabetes). Any family with a child with Type 1 diabetes is welcome to attend camp.

Family Camp is where you can renew and grow relationships with family and friends. It is where you come to camp (kids and parents together) and experience ‘special’ time as a family. Family Camp is also a great place for children with Type 1 diabetes to start learning about camp settings. Often campers attend Family Camp and later attend Camp Kakhamela on their own - it’s a great way to gear up to our summer camp and leadership programs.

Each family will have their own cabin or room within the lodges. All meals and programs costs are included in the single camp fee. Families will have the opportunity to experience all that camp has to offer.

All programs are optional, and are lead by trained, and certified program staff.

Medical Care/Diabetes Management

Families are responsible for the supervision of their children while at camp. Unlike our children’s camp (Camp Kakhamela) in the summer, during family camp there are no counsellors to supervise the children. Parents are responsible for their child’s medical and dietary supervision as well as supplying their own diabetes medication and monitoring supplies.

Our Medical Staff team consists of a Pediatric Endocrinologist, Nurse, and Dietitian. All Medical Staff will be available for the entire weekend to answer questions, and to lead several formal information sessions for parents, and a few informal sessions for the children. Overall, the atmosphere is relaxed and laid-back, where families and medical staff can intermingle, and learn from one-another over a meal or cup of coffee.

Meals

Our Registered Dietitians work closely with the Kitchen staff to coordinate diabetes meal planning for all the campers. This ensures that all meals are nutritious and that carbohydrates have been properly counted.

When families arrive they will each be given a hypoglycemic kit containing juice and snacks, as well as a written protocol for treating lows in our camp setting. There will be a snack table set up for families to use in order to restock their snack supplies for treating lows.

Transportation

Camp is located on the Sunshine Coast, Near Gibsons BC. Transportation is not provided to and from Family Camp, but directions including information about the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal are provided upon registration.
